Rules and entitlements during the end-of-year holiday season

During the end-of-year holiday season, businesses may require employees to work extra hours, on public holidays, or during shutdowns. Employers can direct staff to take annual leave during shutdowns if their award or agreement allows it, with reasonable notice. For employees without enough leave, they may agree to take unpaid leave or use leave before it’s accrued. Those who work on public holidays may be entitled to penalty rates or a different day off. Employers should check their policies to ensure they follow the correct pay and leave rules.
