BYD now employs more than 1.02 million people worldwide, exceeding the combined workforce of Toyota, Ford, General Motors and Tesla by approximately 170,000 employees.
The extraordinary scale of the Chinese automotive and technology manufacturer was revealed by chairman Wang Chuanfu during the China Society of Automotive Engineers’ annual conference on 28 October 2026.
Speaking as he received China’s prestigious Rao Bin automotive industry award, Wang confirmed that BYD’s global workforce had surpassed one million employees.
The announcement highlights the scale of a company that has expanded from battery manufacturing into one of the world’s largest automotive and technology businesses.
BYD Workforce Compared With Major Automotive Manufacturers
According to the latest available corporate workforce disclosures, BYD now employs approximately 20% more people than four of the world’s most established automotive manufacturers combined.
| Manufacturer | Global employees |
|---|---|
| BYD | 1,020,000+ |
| Toyota | 390,927 |
| Ford | 169,000 |
| General Motors | 155,000 |
| Tesla | 134,785 |
| Four manufacturers combined | 849,712 |
BYD’s workforce exceeds the combined total by approximately 170,000 employees.
The figures are drawn from different corporate reporting periods, with Toyota’s workforce reported in March 2026 and the other three manufacturers using figures from the end of 2025.
They nevertheless provide a striking indication of BYD’s size.
Importantly, the comparison is based on total company employment rather than employees exclusively involved in vehicle manufacturing.
More Than 120,000 Research and Development Engineers
Of BYD’s approximately 1.02 million employees:
- 960,000 are based in China.
- 60,000 are employed internationally.
- 120,000 work as research and development engineers.
The company’s engineering workforce supports development across batteries, electric motors, electronic controls, semiconductors and other technologies.
BYD’s extensive investment in research and development forms a central part of its approach to vehicle manufacturing and technology.
Unlike many conventional automotive manufacturers, BYD produces a substantial proportion of its critical components internally.
This approach, known as vertical integration, reduces reliance on external suppliers for certain technologies while requiring substantial in-house manufacturing and engineering resources.
Why BYD Employs So Many People
BYD’s enormous workforce reflects a business structure that extends well beyond passenger vehicles.
The group operates across several industries, including:
- Electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles
- Battery production and energy storage
- Electronic component manufacturing
- Semiconductors and electric motors
- Commercial vehicles and industrial equipment
- Rail transport and renewable energy technologies
BYD also manufactures electronic products and components for other companies.
Consequently, its employee numbers cannot be compared directly with automotive manufacturers that outsource a larger share of their component production.
A larger workforce does not automatically mean greater vehicle production or higher productivity.
Toyota, for example, sells substantially more vehicles annually than BYD despite employing fewer people across its consolidated operations.
The difference illustrates how manufacturing strategies, business diversification and supply chains can significantly influence workforce size.
BYD’s Global Workforce Has Grown Rapidly
BYD reported approximately 869,622 employees at the end of 2025, meaning its latest workforce figure is around 150,000 higher.
The company’s international expansion is occurring alongside increasing investment in manufacturing, research, distribution and customer support.
Although the majority of BYD employees remain based in China, overseas operations are becoming an increasingly important part of the business.
The manufacturer continues to expand internationally as competition intensifies within China’s domestic automotive market.
What Does BYD’s Workforce Mean for Australia?
BYD’s growing Australian presence provides a local example of the company’s international ambitions.
Since entering Australia’s passenger vehicle market in late 2022, BYD has expanded its model range, dealership representation and aftersales operations.
The company has reported more than 150,000 Australian vehicle deliveries, while its dealership network is targeting more than 150 locations by the end of 2026.
As the number of BYD vehicles on Australian roads increases, the company and its retail partners face growing requirements for technical support, servicing, parts availability and skilled automotive personnel.
For Australia’s automotive industry, BYD’s scale is relevant beyond its vehicle sales figures.
Its substantial engineering resources, vertically integrated manufacturing operations and expanding international workforce provide the infrastructure to support continued product development and overseas market expansion.
BYD now employs more people than Toyota, Ford, General Motors and Tesla combined, but the more significant story is the scale and diversity of the operations supporting its automotive growth.
